Dear Brown Female: Proximity-To-Whiteness Doesn’t Make You White

by Divya Kumar

As a young child of Indian immigrants expanding upwards in white suburban Connecticut, I happened to be the only real brown child in school for most of my early youth. Frequent race-based microaggressions and straight-up bullying in elementary school taught me personally that my personal Indian identification lead ridicule and pity at the hands of my white colleagues. No body could pronounce my personal identity, and both teens and coaches discovered laughter in butchering they. We had sculptures of Hindu deities within home, I understood no Bible stories, and I also have not ever been skiing. All of our cooking area at home “smelled weird”. A number of my buddies’ mothers remarked which they got never ever had an Indian child at their house.

My Personal mother got this amusing practice of always directed on any other Indian-appearing youngster in just about any general public place – “Look! There’s another Indian lady! Run and state hello to the lady; perhaps you’ll socialize?” While I is a kid, i discovered they perplexing and didn’t understand just why i might have nothing in accordance with a random girl over the space. I would respond to my mummy, “simply because she’s Indian doesn’t indicate that we have something in keeping!”

By secondary school, after several years of are chuckled at for being different, I know that so that you can survive socially, I had to develop to move as far as feasible from any such thing Indian, thus I thought we would absorb and make myself personally as culturally white as is possible.
